SAND & STEEL:  playing around with new materials

SAND: During a family vacation in the Dominican, my son and I started building daily sand sculptures on the beach. A combination of the tide and a tractor raking the sand every morning meant a short life for the sculptures, but we were ok with that. It was all about how satisfying it was to create something hands-on. The mermaid's hair and tail are made with seaweed collected on the beach.

STEEL: My latest personal project s working on cold rolled steel. The image is built up using the natural rusting process in some areas while masking out other areas with rust-proof paint to control the design. These pics show the progression over a 6 week period as well as some details of areas that show the wonderful marks that can be achieved using various techniques.
